Chapter 13

Sunny

Thankfully, the term was keeping me busy enough that time passed quickly, and I hadn’t had much time to dwell on anything Baron had suggested about the Morrigan. However, it appeared that my best friend had plenty of time to dwell on things that didn’t require nearly as much of her time or attention as she was giving them.

“It’s not that I have anything against Alec, specifically,” Iris lamented, keeping her voice low as she and I made our way up to our first class of the day some weeks later. “It’s… Man, I don’t even know how to explain it to you in a meaningful way because you’re not clairvoyant.” She shrugged her backpack higher up onto her shoulders and gave me an apologetic look.

“She’s never done anything to you or to me,” I shot back, feeling beyond exhausted from having the same conversation with Iris every single day. “So frankly, I have no idea what your problem is with Alec, but at this point you have to accept the possibility that it’s just you being hyper critical for no reason.”

“Wow, Iris,” I rolled my eyes. “What a nice thing to say about someone you really know nothing about.”

Iris’ brow furrowed, and her lips pursed in a tight line. “Sunny, you know I’m the last person on the planet to pass judgment without good reason. Look at me! Folks judge me all the time! And you know what!?” Her voice rose, and I urged her to keep it down, because the last thing I needed was her causing any problems for me.

She sighed and leaned closer to me. “I’m not even judging her. I-I mean, not really. All I’m saying is that I’ve had this magic for a long time, and I’ve never had this happen before. I’ve never been completely unable to read someone.”

“Well, to be fair you shouldn’t have been trying to read her mind to begin with!” I shot back, now going against my own request to keep it down. “I mean, what were
